Facebook is seeking a forward thinking experienced individual to join the Data Center Operations Team. The person should enjoy working in a fast-paced environment where adaptability and flexibility is key to their success. This position is full-time and will be based in Forest City, North Carolina.

We seek an IT professional with management and leadership experience and advanced hands-on technical skills in Server Hardware, Project Management, Networks, and Linux (ideally in a Data center environment). Having depth and breadth knowledge of managing servers in a large-scale distributed environment is a core competency of this individual.

The Plan & Build Team are responsible for how we plan, add, change and remove computing capacity to and from our data center fleet. This person will lead this team and is expected to have strong planning and project management experience as this team will manage and execute multiple, complex infrastructure projects within the data center in parallel, including capacity planning, installations, retrofits, hardware retirement, data eradication and service migrations. This person should also have strong people management, leadership and development experience.

Required Skills:

  1. Establishing and managing a Data Center Plan & Build Team responsible for the IT capacity life cycle including planning, installation, and safe retirement of server hardware and supporting infrastructure at scale

  2. Responsible for delivery of Facebook’s products and services from the data center site, and for ensuring operational delivery through collaboration and partnership with both remote and local peer organizations

  3. Work with peer organizations and regional teams that affect and deliver services to data center operations such as network operations, project management, facilities/maintenance management, logistics and supply chain operations in order to successfully deliver and maintain data center capacity to support ongoing business growth

  4. Mentoring and developing Engineers, Technicians and Site Project Managers such that they can run daily operations with minimal supervision

  5. Building, leading and developing both the technical capabilities and leadership qualities of team members

  6. Collaborating with other Plan & Build Managers in data center sites around the globe to evolve and optimize processes and approaches in a globally consistent way to allow Facebook to scale and grow effectively

  7. Create and drive a culture of ownership, innovation, collaboration, accountability, and safety. Support and contribute thought leadership to the development and implementation of business practices which support the growth and ongoing management of our global data center IT footprint

  8. Track issues and analyze data looking for trends and systemic issues, reporting out globally

  9. Be forward thinking by understanding data center growth, identifying scaling issues before they occur and contributing to solutions. Drive specifications and ideas for tooling and automation that facilitate deployment and decommissioning of server hardware at scale

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. BS or BA in technical field or commensurate experience

  2. 4+ years of experience managing 5+ technical resources

  3. Knowledge with Linux and hardware systems support in an Internet operations environment

  4. 4+ years of experience in large-scale data center hardware deployments and building scaling infrastructure

  5. 2+ years of managing multiple projects within the same time schedule

  6. Knowledge of enterprise level infrastructure

  7. Knowledge of server infrastructure automation and concepts such as provisioning, out-of-band access and configuration management

  8. Communication experience

  9. Time and project management experience

  10. Experience training, mentoring, and leading other engineers
