Attempting to connect the world requires an alternative approach to building and deploying telecom network infrastructure. Through organisations like the Telecom Infra Project (www.telecominfraproject.com (http://www.telecominfraproject.com/)) and through direct engagement with individual operators around the world, the team collaborates globally with the telecom industry to identify and execute a range of connectivity programs. If you have passion for working with operators, ISPs, technology vendors and other industry stakeholders to drive innovative, cutting edge, cost efficient wireless and network infrastructure projects that will deliver internet access to the unconnected while significantly scaling current networks – then this is a great role for you.
As a Connectivity Technologies and Ecosystems Manager you will work closely with the Facebook Connectivity team and TIP ecosystem members to develop telecom infrastructure in the area of wireless networking. In parallel, you will interface with industry leading technology partners, including hardware/software vendors and systems solution providers. Finally, you will work closely with network operators adopting the telecom infrastructure to understand how Facebook and its partners’ contributions can be of most impact to this diverse ecosystem. This position is full-time and is based in London.
A technical expert who questions the status quo and uses their strategic vision for the connectivity technology landscape to shape Facebook's efforts in the wireless networking domain. Ultimately they will enable infrastructure solutions with the network operator community and drive deployments across the industry at large.
Define cutting edge network deployment approaches and plan operator trials for innovative infrastructure solutions that will help deliver on the vision for wider scale telecom infrastructure adoption.
Advocate internally at Facebook, through the Telecom Infrastructure Project (TIP), and the partner community at large on how to maximise opportunities to successfully deploy new hardware and software contributions across the industry.
Manage the technical relationships with network operator and infrastructure partners to help reduce friction and remove obstacles facing networking hardware/software contribution and market adoption.
Identify key wireless networking use cases and common technical requirements from operator partners to drive design parameters within Facebook programs and the technology vendor community.
Educate the Facebook Connectivity team about how to contribute to TIP, highlight achievements/impact of contributions and share developments coming from partners.
Write white papers, blog posts and technical materials to share with the broader community with the goal to introduce and help drive adoption of TIP infrastructure.
Stay abreast of developments in the wireless networking including technology R&D, use-cases, hardware/software evolution and share that knowledge with the team.
Support the direction and expansion of the team, helping to scope future roles as the charter of the team grows.

Previous experience (6+ years) as a manager/engineer in R&D, technical marketing, solutions architecture, product management, product engineering or consultancy services in areas related to wireless networking.
Firm understanding of networking architectures that provide connectivity to end users (at home, at work, at public spaces, in transportation, etc) and the relevant network design trade-offs and common deployment and operational challenges.
Firm understanding of Wi-Fi connectivity use cases and business models.
Firm understanding of the IEEE 802.11 family of standards, including it's evolution and latest developments.
Firm understanding of the Wi-Fi ecosystem including standard and certification bodies (IEEE, WFA...), ASIC providers, OEMs and System Integrators.
Firm understanding of relevant network and security protocols and specifications (TCP/IP, Layer-3 Routing, Layer-2 switching, user authentication, data encryption, etc).
Knowledge in any of the following areas is a plus: Android/iPhone handset networking stack, captive portal implementation, backhaul IP and optical networking, data center networking, Internet peering, content caching, virtualisation, network monitoring and remediation, telco process orchestration/automation, implementation of PaaS and SaaS services, software development, distributed systems engineering.
Ability to translate technical features into end-user use cases and identify related business opportunities.
Ability to understand Wi-Fi operator deployment scenarios for different geographies, population densities, indoor vs. outdoor, range of ARPUs and uses cases to drive development of flexible, cost-effective and open network infrastructure.
Ability to drive infrastructure hardware/software proof of concepts trials within Facebook and/or at partner labs ultimately leading to field trial evaluations prior to rapid commercial deployment.
Ability to lead partners in the development of new technical solutions, including network hardware, protocol software, user-facing interfaces and applications, network management systems, and any other critical pieces for the adoption of a complete wireless connectivity solution.
BS or higher in Telecommunications engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or equivalent degree/experience.
Communication skills including ability to speak to technical and business audiences including C-level execs.
Fluency in English. Other languages are a plus.
Willingness and ability to travel internationally up to 35% of the time.
