Instagram is seeking a Software Engineer experienced in optimizing the performance of complex JavaScript Web Applications to join the Instagram Web Foundation team. The Instagram Web Foundation team builds the infrastructure that ensures that Instagram Web and Web based products are fast, agile, and reliable. We are looking for candidates who share a passion for web performance and are looking to make an impact and advance the state of the art in this field. This position is full-time and based in our Menlo Park, CA office.

Required Skills:

  1. Optimize rendering performance and responsiveness on low end devices (targeting 60fps interactions)

  2. Ensure stability and minimal data usage especially under unreliable/intermittent network conditions

  3. Utilizing the latest web platform primitives such as Service Workers for optimizing performance

  4. Work with browser vendors on future W3C standards

  5. Automate performance measurement and analysis

  6. Own high-visibility performance metrics

  7. Mentor engineers on performance best practices

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. B.S. in Computer Science/related technical field or equivalent experience

  2. 3+ years experience building web applications or infrastructure using JavaScript

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Deep knowledge of browser internals such as the network/caching layer, JavaScript VMs, and layout/rendering engines

  2. Some experience in Python
