The Facebook Connectivity team is developing new platforms for connectivity on the ground, in the air and in orbit, using a variety of technologies, including RF and free-space optical communication. To make this a reality, we need to develop innovative mechanical systems for a variety of these technologies. Facebook is seeking a creative Mechanical Engineer to join our Connectivity Team as we build the technical foundation upon which the world shares and connects.
Develop mechanical hardware designs from initial concepts through early trades, sizing analyses, component selection, refinement of design details, drawing generation, hardware procurement, first-article inspection, assembly and integration, and performance/environment qualification testing
Develop component and assembly drawings and specifications, tolerances
Perform thermal, structural, and mechanical integrity modeling and analysis to predict and optimize the system performance
Design and implement complex mechanical assemblies meeting challenging performance criteria while being low-cost and manufacturable and deployable in volume
Generate thorough design documentation, including design review slides, analysis reports, fabrication & assembly drawings, assembly and test procedures, etc.
Provide oversight to the fabrication and participate in assembly, integration, and test
Work closely with external partners and vendors
Design performance characterization and environmental qualification test setups, including both hardware design and test procedures
BS, MS, or PhD in mechanical engineering with at least 10 years of academic or industry experience
Experience in delivering products with volume manufacturing and are compliant and certified under industry standards
Experience in CAD design tools for parts, assemblies, drawing generation, GD&T, configuration management
Experience in analysis tools, i.e. ANSYS, NASTRAN, Adams, MATLAB
Experience in owning a mechanical development effort as a lead engineer
Experience in one or more of the following areas: electronics packaging, precision hardware and mechanisms, opto-mechanical design and analysis, gimbals and optical pointing systems, space and airborne systems, RF/Microwave Communication Systems
Experience with environmental and reliability testing (shock & vibration, thermal cycling, vacuum systems, etc.)
Experience in design for manufacturability and design to cost, and other DFX concepts
Communication, interpersonal, negotiation and organizational experience
