Facebook Research Intern, Optical and Perceptual Sciences (PhD University Student) in Redmond, Washington


Oculus is a world leader in the design of virtual reality systems. We are currently seeking innovative research interns with a passion for technology to develop next-generation head-mounted display and imaging systems at our research location in Redmond, WA. These roles are focused on the research and development of optical components and systems towards building advanced virtual reality display systems. In particular we welcome Masters or PhD students in optical science or engineering, electrical engineering, physics, or similar.

Our internships are twelve (12) to sixteen (16) weeks long and we have various start dates throughout the year.

Required Skills:

  1. Develop next generation AR/VR display prototypes with an emphasis on both modeling and prototyping of the new concepts.

  2. Explore novel display concepts in one of the following areas - perceptual effects in displays, polarization concepts, nano or micro optics or geometric optics design

  3. The position will focus on development of advanced simulations, algorithms, image processing and hardware graphics interfaces

  4. Collaborate with the larger Oculus Research team and provide creative leadership on display and imaging technologies.

  5. The type of work should be publishable research results in top-tier journals and at leading international conferences.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Pursuing a PhD degree in the field of Optical Science or Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Computer Science or a related field

  2. Currently enrolled in a full time degree program and returning to the program after the completion of the internship

  3. Must be available for a 3-4 month internship between January 1, 2019 and December 31, 2019

  4. 1+ years experience geometric, physical optics, or micro-optics emphasizing modeling and hardware prototyping

  5. Demonstrated ability in optical design and modeling methods (e.g., proficiency with Matlab, Zemax, Code V, or similar)

  6. 1+ years experience with experimental optics and conducting laboratory work (i.e., demonstrated ability to construct proof-of-concept systems and to evaluate performance)

  7. 2+ years experience with scientific programming languages such as Matlab, Python, Mathematica, or similar

  8. Interpersonal skills: cross-group and cross-culture collaboration

  9. Must obtain work authorization in country of employment at the time of hire, and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Demonstrated experience via an internship, work experience, or widely used contributions to open source projects

  2. Proven track record of achieving significant results as demonstrated by first-authored publications
