Facebook Strategy Linguist (Phonetics) in Seattle, Washington


As a Strategy Linguist in Phonetics, you will manage language data analysis for ASR and TTS systems. You will be responsible for determining speech data needs and setting the strategic vision for data-based model and product improvements. You will work closely with engineers, research scientists, product managers, and other cross-functional partners to create consistent speech products across dialects and languages, and help to design and develop Facebook’s speech data infrastructure. You will use your analytical mindset, strong communication skills, collaborative attitude, and personal drive to achieve team goals.We value expertise in any subfield of phonetics (articulatory, acoustic, neurolinguistic, etc.), expect a passion for the scientific study of language, and require research experience that includes a thorough understanding of the scientific method and experimental design. We are seeking new colleagues who work well on teams, are open to different viewpoints, and can quickly agree on the most optimal solutions to ASR and TTS problems.

Required Skills:

  1. Provide linguistic expertise in the areas of phonetics, phonology, lexicography, dialectology, and NLP.

  2. Design and conduct experiments for evaluating transcription quality.

  3. Develop manual and automated processes for multiple concurrent projects including ensuring high-quality label alignments, prosodic classification, POS identification and disambiguation, targeted modeling data, and user feedback.

  4. Create and perfect text normalization and inverse text normalization processes.

  5. Manage lexical and phrasal transcriptions and related metadata.

  6. Analyze system metrics such as user opinion, lexicon transcription coverage, and POS tagger performance and remedy pain points.

  7. Build and/or pilot software tools for data evaluation and management.

  8. Work in concert with other linguists, as well as data scientists, engineers, and project managers to achieve project goals.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Degree in Linguistics, Language Technologies, Computational Linguistics, Speech Science, related field, or equivalent industry experience.

  2. Experience in phonetics and various other areas of linguistics such as phonology, sociolinguistics, dialectology, computational linguistics, and field work.

  3. Knowledge in transcription and annotation systems such as SAMPA, IPA, and ToBI.

  4. Experience analyzing waveforms and spectrograms for phonetic features.

  5. Knowledge of prescriptive writing and punctuation conventions for at least one language.

  6. Experience with experimental design for language data.

  7. Experience with programming techniques and knowledge with languages and platforms such as Praat, Python, SQL, PHP, Hack, JavaScript, and React.

  8. Experience prioritizing multiple work streams and conducting day-to-day tasks without oversight.

  9. Track record working on or leading cross-functional efforts, initiatives, or projects.

  10. Experience forming internal team relationships and fostering external relations.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Advanced degree in Linguistics, Language Technologies, Computational Linguistics, Speech Science, or related field.

  2. Experience with larger scripting projects that involve combining language data from different sources, computing complex metrics over large datasets, etc.

  3. Strong understanding of the relationship between data and machine learning models in order to increase linguists’ impact on ML projects.

  4. Familiarity with core data processing techniques and tooling (including version control, unit tests, and other programming best practices).

  5. Demonstrated leadership within smaller project or teams.

  6. Fluency in two or more natural languages.

  7. 2+ years relevant industry experience.
