Facebook Community Threat Investigator in Washington, District Of Columbia

Facebook’s Threat Intelligence team is seeking a technical investigator to help us build investigations methods and use new research approaches to protect Facebook users from disinformation threats. We are looking for a candidate with a passion for security and innovation who will research and help design novel approaches to mitigating emerging threats to civic integrity. The candidate will be a part of a team that works proactively to investigate and deeply understanding the global threat and information operations landscape as it manifests on our products, and that helps guide the company in its responses to these threats. Investigators will have the opportunity to work on some of the most challenging, complicated, and high-visibility security risks the company is facing. The potential for impact with this work is substantial, as outcomes could affect the billions of people who use our products.

The perfect candidate will have an investigative background at the nexus of data analytics and attribution analysis, with experience in data-driven decision making, and programming/scripting proficiency. Highly qualified candidates will possess a professional understanding of nation state operations and motivations, and will have worked in a multinational organization. It is important candidates are focused on results, and are self-starters.

Required Skills:

  1. Prototype new investigative approaches to identify complex threats on the FB platform

  2. Work with investigators and regional subject matter experts to deeply understand emerging adversary tactics as they manifest on the Facebook platform

  3. Code using primarily PHP, Python, SQL, and R

  4. Conduct technical investigations into disinformation campaigns

  5. Implement abuse detection systems to surface threats

  6. Interface with other teams to incorporate their innovations and vice versa

  7. Take a leadership role in driving internal security and privacy initiatives

  8. Conduct design and code reviews

  9. Analyze and interpret the results of security experiments

  10. Answer attack and threat related questions by using appropriate statistical techniques

  11. Address sensitive content issues, including but not limited to graphic images, videos and writings, offensive or derogatory language, and other objectionable material

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Knowledge of computer networking concepts and how to use them to further technical investigations

  2. Demonstrated experience in using databases and/or scripting languages (SQL, Python, R) to manipulate, transform, and analyze data

  3. Experience with open source investigation techniques

  4. Experience with empirical research and answering questions with data

  5. Experience analyzing data from varying sources

  6. Experience communicating quantitative analysis

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Experience working with a graph data model

  2. Experience working with large data sets, experience working with distributed computing tools such as Map/Reduce, Hadoop, Hive, etc.
